Finding Calm in the Storm

Finding Calm in the Storm

Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. James 5:7-8

In the season of Advent, we look expectantly to the celebration of the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day. The stress and pressure of gift giving can distract from the spiritual transformation possible when we invite the indwelling of the Holy Spirit at Christmastime. Indeed, Christmas can be particularly difficult on those who lack resources if we mistakenly focus on the material aspects of the holiday.

I remember sitting at the kitchen table of a farmer whose land bordered the Missouri River near Sidney, Iowa. It was a rainy day and we talked on and on. I was impressed by how gracious this farmer was to me. Near the end of the visit he explained that most of his farm was under flood waters and that he was grateful I made the visit. I was completely surprised by his statement. I had no idea the river was flooding or so close. I am often amazed at how this man remained so calm and so gracious during a time of literal storm and flood.

As we approach Christmas, I pray that I may calmly seek God’s spirit to enter my life as I recognize the true gift of Jesus Christ in my life.

Prayer for Peace: O God Our Creator, help us welcome the peace of Jesus Christ this day. Grant us patience to endure difficulties and grace to share your goodness with others, even when we are in the midst of life’s storms. Amen.
